ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Optimized Image Quality for an Accurate Diagnosis

Ultrasonography is available at all three of our hospitals: Lexington, Saratoga & Wellington.

At Rood & Riddle, we believe speed and accuracy in equine diagnostics are key. Ultrasonography is a frequently used, noninvasive and versatile tool that allows our veterinarians to visualize the internal anatomy of your equine partner. The availability of digital ultrasound allows us to immediately assess an area of interest in a wide variety of soft tissues, allowing us to make a swift diagnosis when the problem cannot be detected by radiographs alone.

An ultrasound probe uses high-frequency acoustic waves to produce a real-time image of the soft tissue being evaluated. During lameness examinations, musculoskeletal structures such as tendons, ligaments, joints and bone surfaces may be evaluated for signs of injury. The abdomen and thorax may also be assessed for pregnancies, conditions including pneumonia, gastrointestinal tract abnormalities (colic), cardiac disease and umbilical infections in foals.

Additionally, ultrasound is used as a guide during biopsies and therapeutic injections. Our portable unit enables us to conveniently image multiple aspects of the horse’s anatomy at your farm.
