Expert Care for Your Horse's Oral Health

Dentistry Services are available at all three of our hospitals: Lexington, Saratoga & Wellington.

Proper and consistent dental care for your horse is paramount to maintaining sound health and maximum performance levels. Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital’s experienced veterinarians are committed to offering a full range of equine dentistry services, from routine dental procedures in the field to advanced procedures at our hospital.

The average horse generally requires annual dental care, but the frequency can vary from horse to horse depending on age, diet and activity. The most important part of dental care is a thorough and complete oral exam. During the oral exam, each tooth will be explored for sharp enamel points that often necessitate floating of the teeth. Your horse’s mouth will also be assessed for signs of disease and abnormalities that could be causing discomfort.

Our veterinarians use the latest surgical techniques and have invested in today’s most advanced equipment to give your horse the best possible outcome. Our power dental instruments have water irrigation and suction, preventing thermal damage and allowing superior visibility and precision. Our digital radiography unit can also perform dental radiographs on the farm to help diagnose and better treat our patients with complex dental diseases.

Problems in the mouth can manifest in many ways. These can include performance issues, resentment of the bit, lameness, odor from the mouth, dropping food, drooling or difficulty chewing. Proper dental care will ensure that your horse’s teeth are not causing discomfort, pain or other potential health issues.
