Now Interviewing: Equine Nursing Staff – for the 2026 breeding season
Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, KY is currently accepting applications for Equine Nursing Staff positions for the upcoming 2026 breeding season, beginning in January. This is a full-time role offering competitive benefits and the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team of experienced veterinary professionals.
As a member of our Equine Nursing Staff, you will play a role in providing high-quality care to a diverse population of equine patients. This hands-on, fast-paced role involves working both indoors and outdoors, including travel between barns and other hospital areas.
The nursing staff’s primary focus is ensuring Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital patients consistently receive top-quality care in the form of monitoring vitals/comfort levels, administering medications/fluids, walking/grooming/feeding/cleaning and assisting with procedures. Nursing staff members work with a variety of breeds – from miniature horses to draft breeds – and all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics.
Primary Duties
• Duties vary from barn to barn and include working with horses of all ages and occasionally different large animal species.
• Following the clinician’s orders and making a treatment list.
• Preparing and administering medications (via multiple routes, i.e., IV, PO, IM, SQ, IN, etc).
• Monitoring patients’ vital signs and reporting any abnormalities or concerns to the area leader and charge nurse.
• Monitoring fluids by setting accurate drip rates, making fluids, and setting up and taking down fluid set ups.
• Pulling blood from an intravenous catheter and performing/monitoring basic lab tests such as PCV/TP, lactate, and blood glucose levels.
• Assisting veterinarians and other areas with in-hospital cases in various departments as needed and as bio-security permits
• Walking, watering, feeding, and grooming patients; picking stalls as needed.
• Cleaning assigned barn pharmacies, nearby treatment areas, and equipment.
• End of shift duties, ensure fluids and supplies are stocked, pharmacies cleaned, carts are stocked and clean, and stall side areas and carts are stocked and cleaned.
• On occasion, help prepare medications for the next shift.
• Follow bio-security protocol and RREH patient care standards.
• Attending mandatory meetings.
• Reading and responding to emails regarding updates and changes.
• Open to continuous on-the-job training.
• Handling all breeds and ages of horses, in and out of stalls. Restraining horses for procedures.
• Be familiar with RREH manuals and protocols.
• Any other tasks as assigned by clinicians, area leaders, charge nurses, and technician managers.
Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of one year handling horses other than own
• Basic understanding of math
• Ability to consistently lift 50-75lbs unassisted
• Ability to bend over/stand/sit for long periods of time
Preferred Skills
• Equine Veterinary medical experience/knowledge helpful
• Knowledge of general horse behavior and restraint

Schedule
• Day and Night shifts available
• Days Shift 5:30am to 6pm
• Night Shift 5:30pm to 6am
• Full-time: minimum of 36-48 hours per week, depending on the season
• Year-round and seasonal spots available
• Requires a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
