MEET DR. JOSE BRAS

Dr. Jose Bras is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he grew up riding and competing with Paso Fino horses. Dr. Bras attended Louisiana State University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1999. In 2005, he graduated from The Ohio State University with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Bras accepted his first of two internships at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. Aspiring to become an equine surgeon, Jose did a second internship at Kansas State University, where he would later accept a surgical residency position. While completing his residency, Dr. Bras also earned a Master’s degree in Biomedical Science. Jose remained at Kansas State as a Clinical Assistant Professor/Emergency Clinician until 2012, when he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Large Animals.

In 2012, Dr. Bras accepted a surgical position at a private practice in Lexington, KY. Jose accepted a position in ambulatory surgery at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in 2015. In 2016, Jose accepted the head surgeon position at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Wellington. While maintaining his responsibilities in Florida, Dr. Bras travels nationally and internationally to the thoroughbred sales. Dr. Bras became a shareholder at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in 2020. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Lise, daughter, Ana Lise, and son, Jose Joaquin.
