Neurological Evaluation and Muscle Biopsy in a Mare by Dr. Miller Turpin and Dr. Hugo Almonte

Patient Presentation
A mare presented for referral neurological evaluation following an acute onset of ataxia (incoordination).

Initial Evaluation and Findings
Dr. Miller Turpin performed a comprehensive neurological examination to assess the mare’s deficits and localize the potential source of the neurologic dysfunction. Given the clinical findings, further diagnostics were indicated to investigate underlying neuromuscular disease.

Medical or Surgical Management
Muscle biopsies were performed by surgeon Dr. Hugo Almonte to obtain tissue samples for histopathologic evaluation. The samples were submitted to a diagnostic laboratory to aid in determining the underlying cause of the mare’s neurologic signs and to guide treatment planning.

Outcome
Histopathology results helped the team reach a diagnosis and develop a targeted treatment and management plan to support the mare’s recovery and return to health.

Educational Takeaway
Neurological cases often require collaboration between internal medicine specialists and surgeons. Advanced diagnostics such as muscle biopsy and histopathology are valuable tools for identifying neuromuscular disorders and guiding appropriate treatment strategies.
