Hind Limb Laceration Management in a Filly with Drain Placement by Dr. Julia Gloviczki
Patient Presentation
A young filly presented with a laceration to her left hind limb sustained during turnout with pasture mates.
Initial Evaluation and Findings
Examination revealed a significant soft tissue laceration with notable dead space, increasing the risk of fluid accumulation and delayed healing. Careful assessment was performed to determine the most appropriate wound management strategy.
Medical or Surgical Management
Dr. Julia Gloviczki of Rood & Riddle Saratoga placed a surgical drain to divert exudate and reduce dead space, promoting optimal wound healing. The drain was removed several days later, and sutures were removed within a few weeks as healing progressed.
Outcome
The filly’s wound healed successfully, and she returned to normal activity with excellent cosmetic and functional recovery of the limb.
Educational Takeaway
Management of wounds with significant dead space often requires drain placement to prevent fluid accumulation and infection. Proper wound care and timely removal of drains and sutures are critical for successful healing and return to function.
