VETERINARY EQUINE PODIATRY FELLOW

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is offering a two-year Equine Veterinary Podiatry Fellowship designed for a licensed veterinarian who has completed a one-year equine internship and possesses fundamental farrier skills. This immersive experience provides advanced training in equine podiatry, including lameness diagnosis, therapeutic shoeing, and surgical intervention. Fellows will become proficient in a broad range of diagnostic and treatment procedures.

 

The purpose of the Podiatry Fellowship is to advance the Fellow’s knowledge and skill in equine foot health through a collaborative environment with experienced veterinarians and farriers. The Fellow will gain hands-on experience in diagnosing, managing, and preventing complex foot

conditions in a variety of equine patients, with the ultimate goal of becoming a highly competent equine veterinary podiatrist.

 

Primary Duties
• Participate in the daily operations of the Rood & Riddle Podiatry service, including case work-up, treatment, trimming/shoeing and follow-up care with both ambulatory and in the hospital.

• Diagnostic evaluations such as radiographs, MRIs, CT scans, venograms and other advanced imaging techniques.

• Fabricate and modify therapeutic shoes and orthotic devices under direct and indirect supervision.

• Contribute to consultations with clients, farriers and referring veterinarians to develop and implement individualized treatment plans. 

• Maintain accurate, detailed medical records and participate in case reviews and rounds.
• Attend and participate in continuing education opportunities and educational outreach, including seminars and publications.

 

Requirements
• DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school
• Successful completion of a one-year equine veterinary internship
• Kentucky veterinary licensure
• Foundational farrier skills and a desire to further develop blacksmithing and shoeing
• Strong interest in equine lameness and podiatry 

• Demonstrated commitment to patient care and professional development
• Physical ability to handle horses and perform farrier and veterinary duties in variable environmental conditions.
