Internal Medicine Services are available at all three of our hospitals: Lexington, Saratoga & Wellington.

The internal medicine department of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is staffed by board-certified internal medicine specialists and is supported by state-of-the-art facilities. Internal medicine is the medical specialty that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that may affect multiple body systems. Our clinicians provide care to treat a wide and sometimes complex range of medical disorders. These conditions can span from sudden-onset critical illnesses to chronic conditions. Internal medicine clinicians frequently collaborate with Rood & Riddle specialists in other departments to provide the best care possible.

Rood & Riddle in Lexington has several barns dedicated to internal medicine patients. The intensive care unit is designed for around-the-clock observation and treatment of critical patients, particularly neonatal foals, by experienced nursing staff. Additionally, a barn is dedicated to late-term pregnant mares that are expected to have difficulty before, during or after parturition. The isolation barn employs strict biosecurity protocols and is critical for treating foals and adult horses with contagious diseases. Multiple stalls at the clinic are padded and equipped with mechanical hoists to aid in the management of recumbent horses.

Our clinicians routinely employ advanced diagnostic techniques and, in conjunction with our on-site laboratories, can provide the most accurate and efficient diagnostic testing available to quickly diagnose and closely monitor their patients’ conditions. Diagnostic capabilities include endoscopy, ultrasonography, gastroscopy, echocardiography, resting electrocardiography, exercising electrocardiography, electromyography, acupuncture, digital radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
