SURGERY DEPARTMENT TECHNICIAN
Do you have strong horse-handling skills and want to build a career in equine veterinary medicine? We are looking for an Equine Surgery Technician to join our surgical team.
This is a hands-on position working directly with horses throughout the surgical process—from transporting and preparing patients for surgery to assisting with anesthesia induction, surgical preparation, equipment setup, and keeping our operating rooms ready for the next case.
What You’ll Do
As part of the surgery team, your responsibilities will include:
- Safely handling, restraining, and transporting equine patients throughout the hospital
- Assisting the anesthesia team with positioning and induction of anesthesia
- Clipping and performing sterile preparation of surgical sites
- Preparing operating rooms for scheduled and emergency procedures
- Opening sterile surgical instruments and supplies while maintaining aseptic technique
- Preparing and assembling surgical packs for sterilization and use
- Cleaning, inspecting, packaging, and re-sterilizing surgical instruments
- Assisting with the setup of specialized surgical equipment, including arthroscopy and laparoscopy camera systems, towers, and instrumentation
- Cleaning and resetting operating rooms between procedures
- Stocking department and maintaining surgical supplies
- Helping keep surgical equipment, instruments, and work areas clean, organized, and ready for use
- Intraoperative radiographs and set up of related equipment
- Digital charting
- Working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, veterinary technicians, and other members of the hospital team to keep cases moving safely and efficiently
What We’re Looking For
- Must be a licensed veterinary technician, able to be licensed in KY &/or eligible for licensure or in the last year of an accredited program.
- Previous professional equine experience is required. Candidates must have experience handling and working with horses other than their own.
- Strong horse-handling and restraint skills and confidence working with a variety of equine patients
- A willingness to learn surgical preparation, aseptic technique, instrumentation, sterilization, and specialized surgical equipment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellent patient care
- Dependability and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work in a busy, physically active hospital environment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods
- Flexibility with scheduling and willingness to work overtime when patient care requires it
- Demonstrates initiative and the ability to work independently or in a diverse group.
- Must be eligible to work in the US without a visa sponsorship.
Schedule
This is a full-time position with primarily daytime hours. Because our schedule is determined by the needs of our patients, candidates must be comfortable with a flexible end time and occasional overtime.
