Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital offers an externship program for students enrolled in accredited Veterinary Technician curriculums. The program is designed to provide students with an off-campus experience under the supervision of a licensed veterinary technician. A period of clinical experience introduces the veterinary technician student to the various daily activities of an equine veterinary technician in the workplace. Students rotate through all hospital areas, including radiology, surgery, medicine, reproduction, laboratory and ambulatory practice. Time frames are arranged individually to fit each student’s needs and schedules. The externship is mainly observation-based, with some hands-on experience when the situation permits. Faculty from the respective colleges monitor the clinical affiliation via phone or visits regularly throughout the program.
Applications for veterinary technician externships will be accepted from students enrolled in AVMA-accredited programs of veterinary technology only. Accreditation must be valid as of January 1 of the year of the externship application. The duration of externships is individually based on the applicant’s veterinary technology program’s requirements. All externships are unpaid. Housing is provided, but all other living expenses and transportation are the responsibility of the extern. Externs must sign a release of liability upon their arrival. Most externships are available from March 1 – August 31, with only a few available in the winter. The deadline for application is 60 days before the first date of the period requested.
