Tongue Laceration Managed with Debridement and Wound Care by Dr. Daniel Devis

Patient Presentation
A Warmblood gelding presented with a tongue injury after it became adhered to a frozen metal feed tub, resulting in oral trauma.

Initial Evaluation and Findings
Examination revealed a tongue laceration requiring veterinary intervention. Although oral injuries are relatively uncommon in horses, they can impact eating, comfort, and long-term oral function if not addressed promptly.

Medical or Surgical Management
Dr. Daniel Devis performed debridement and thorough wound cleaning to remove devitalized tissue, reduce contamination, and promote optimal healing. Supportive care and monitoring were implemented to prevent infection and encourage tissue repair.

Outcome
The gelding responded well to treatment and is expected to heal with normal tongue function following appropriate aftercare.

Educational Takeaway
Oral injuries in horses should be evaluated and treated promptly to prevent infection, ensure proper healing, and preserve normal oral function. Early intervention and meticulous wound management are key to successful outcomes.
